Langtang national park is located near the Tibetan (Chinese) border north from Kathmandu.? Before departing to Langtang you need to get a national park ticket (1000 rupees) and TIMS permit (free of charge) ? both available at tourist information centre near the parade ground. Langtang is the closest national park to the capital, however to reach the park is not so easy ? you need to take a bus to Dunche or Syabrubesi ? the journey takes from 8 to 12 hours depending on the road condition. The buses depart every morning at 7.00-7.30 from Balaju road near the main bus park (note: the buses don?t go from the main bus park, you need to walk 5 minutes to the road to Balaju and buy the ticket from the roadside ticket counter). In case all the seats are sold out, there is always some room left on the top of the roof, but this long journey can be a little bit uncomfortable ? there are no pillows on the roof :) |

Chobar, a picturesque little village located in Kirtipur municipality, is an easy and close destination from Kathmandu. A village with a rich history, it is also known today for its natural beauty. According to legend, Manjushree, a divine saint from China, came across a lake with a glowing lotus in the center. In order to worship the flower, he cut the wall of the lake, creating what is now the famous Chobar gorge, still the only outlet from which the Bagmati River flows out of Kathmandu.
Chobar gorge, also known as Manjushree gorge, is what many tourists and locals come to see in Chobar. Not only is it a well known location in the legend of the creation of Kathmandu, but is also appreciated for its natural beauty. In 1903, a suspension bridge was built over the gorge, giving visitors the chance to enjoy a finer view. The surrounding area is a peaceful and natural spot where people come to relax away from the city. From the hills surrounding the gorge, unique views of nearly the entire of Kathmandu can be seen. |
